Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s son and first President Jomo Kenyatta’s grandson were on Thursday injured in road accident in Nairobi.

Raila Junior and Mr Joseph Muhoho were travelling in a sleek Mercedes Benz when it rammed a BMW belonging to one of their friends on Valley Road at dawn.

The BMW belongs to Mr Mwangi Pepe, the son of former CID Director Joseph Kamau. His passenger was identified as Mr Jeffrey Kiboro.

The group had been at a popular entertainment spot in Kilimani up to about 3am when they left to regroup in town.

Muhoho escaped unhurt, but the others were injured on the hands, face and legs, according to friends and relatives who visited them in hospital yesterday.

Witnesses said both vehicles were cruising at high speed when Raila Jr’s hit the BMW from behind.

Pepe lost control of the car, which then veered off the road and landed in a ditch near the Integrity Centre.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the airbags jutted out.

A guard at a nearby petrol station said he rushed to the scene after hearing a loud bang and started evacuating the victims.

"Those in the BMW were able to get out faster even though two were seriously injured. Other motorists arrived minutes later and took them to hospital," the guard said.

Among those who arrived at the scene moments after the incident was the Prime Minister’s oldest son, Fidel Odinga.

Several senior officers, led by Nairobi Area Traffic Commander James Onyango, were also at the scene.

The vehicles were towed to Kilimani Police Station and journalists were not allowed to take pictures. The registration number plates of the two cars were removed when journalists arrived at the station.

The PM and his wife Ida drove to the scene of the accident two hours after the crash. Witnesses said they looked distraught.

Raila Jr was treated at Nairobi Hospital and discharged, while Pepe and Kiboro were admitted. Doctors said they were in stable condition.

Ida confirmed her son had been discharged and was well.
