Palaver

Updated Friday, May 4th 2012 at 00:00 GMT +3

Poor Serena Williams. Beautiful, rich, world conqueror and famous. Trouble is, she can’t seem to find a date. The former world No. 1 tennis star is only 30 years young and swears she is so heartsick she is ‘suspending’ finding a new man in her life for the next ten years or so. Where did all the Don Juans go? Is there no one, even from Kisii County who is man enough for this girl? I have her contacts if you care to try. In fact, where is that councillor who wanted to send some horned zebus to Chelsea Clinton’s parents or is he also already spoke for. Heelpp!

Election years are really exciting for us journalists. Someone just dug up a former girlfriend of Barack Obama called Genevieve Cook. They apparently dated in 1985, but he was so spaced out about the chick of his dreams that Miss Cook called "lithe, bubbly, strong black lady is waiting somewhere". Michelle perhaps? We will never know for sure. Then they unearthed another Obama girlfriend Alex McNear with whom he conducted "a long-distance, letter-based relationship in 1982." Is nothing sacred? And why do women maintain those diaries anyway? Only something you would expect an explorer or ship captain to do as a daily log. Nkt.

And staying with Obama on his latest stealth whistle-stop tour of Afghanistan. He emphasised the US resolve to end the campaign and bring the lads home. If it was a morale-booster for his charges on the ground then more wind to his sails from Palaver. There is no better motivation than the C-I-C dropping in on troops at the battlefront. He even addressed them via field radio. Any chance we shall see President Kibaki pop into the Somalia frontline and do the same? Remember UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in Mogadishu, complete with UN-emblazoned bullet-proof jacket? A great photo-op, I must say, though they forgot the helmet.

And finally...

Wonders will never cease if it is true the Philippines government is shielding delegates attending an international conference on poverty from seeing a slum along a garbage-choked creek in the capital Manila. Strange because the delegates are Asian Development Bank Board of Governors and finance ministers from 67 member states, that will be discussing how to reduce poverty in the Asia-Pacific region.
