Cecafa strip Zanzibar of hosting Club Championship

The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations ( Cecafa) has withdrawn the hosting rights of Club Championship from Zanzibar and awarded it to Sudan.

In a statement issued by Cecafa secretary-general Nicholas Musonye, Zanzibar are "unable to raise enough funds to cater for air tickets for teams and CECAFA delegations of referees and officials."

"In this regard, Cecafa held a successful meeting with Sudan FA and El Merreikh Group in Khartoum on Tuesday. Sudan FA have therefore agreed to host the event with El Mereikh Group as the sponsors of the tournament in totality," the statement read.

Kenyan Premier League champions Ulinzi Stars will represent Kenya.

Musonye paid tribute to Zanzibar’s efforts to try and host the event. The championship will run from June 21 to July 5.

"We looked at the Caf/Fifa calendar and we agreed that we organise the event from around that time," Musonye said.

He added: "Because of time factor, member associations are requested to confirm their champion clubs by April 30 to enable Cecafa, the hosts and sponsors to work on ticketing and accommodation matters."
