Winning combination at Tusker Malt Golf Carnival

A team of Yassin Awale, David Githaiga, Robert Barua and Sammy Muraya returned an aggregate score of 110 to win the sixth Tusker Malt Golf Carnival qualifier at the Limuru Country Club at the weekend.

Githaiga, playing off a handicap of 11, anchored the team with an excellent score of 40 stableford points, while handicap 13 Barua and Muraya, playing off 14, both contributed 35 points each. Awale, playing off handicap seven, was the weakest link on 30 points.

"We intend to win at the Nairobi Regional Finale and at the Finale of Finales at Muthaiga to make the trip to South Africa in June," said Githaiga.

A team of Paul Waweru, J Wainaina, Njugana Thiaka and Tom Waiharo finished second on an aggregate score of 108 points. Waweru collected 36 points, Wainaina 37 and Thiaka’s 35 points. Limuru Country Club Vice-chairman Waiharo was the weakest link in the group with 31 points, but he ensured a second place finish against the team of Amresh Shah, Dinesh Shah, James Kimani and Ambassador Nicholas Cinto, who also had 108 points.

Because the weakest link in his team, Ambassador Cinto only managed 20 points.

The rules of the Tusker Malt Golf Carnival dictate that in an event of a tie, the fourth score, the score of the weakest link is taken into account. Levy Meitemei, David Owino, Stanley Kariuki and Vincent Wangombe’s team returned an overall score of 107 points, driven mainly by Kariuki’s sizzling 42 points to lift the team to fourth spot.

Meitemei posted 34 points, while Owino played 31 and Wang’ombe returned 26 points. Seven Limuru Country Club teams with scores of 102 points or better qualified for the Tusker Malt Golf Carnival Nairobi Regional qualifiers to be held at the par-72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club on May 15.
