The world’s oldest pupil Stephen Kimani Maruge was buried yesterday in his farm in Subukia.

Maruge received a heroic send off in a ceremony attended by thousands of people.

Maruge, who made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the oldest person to enrol in primary school, died of stomach cancer on August 14 at 89.

Maruge rose to fame when he joined Kapkenduiyo Primary School in 2004 aged 84.

Speakers gave a glowing tribute to Maruge describing him as a hero and an inspiration to learners.

Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat Director General Mugo Kibati said Maruge’s curtain had closed with a string of achievements, which will significantly inspire Kenyans.

"If we stay focused like Mzee Maruge, we shall exceed the goals of Vision 2030 and indeed become a global powerhouse," he said.

Also in attendance was Roads Assistant Minister and Nakuru Town MP Lee Kinyanjui, who said a monument would be erected at the burial site in the hero’s honour.
