Lotto to fete Team Kenya

The Lotto Foundation and Ministry of Sports will tomorrow host Kenyan athletes, who finished top in Africa during this year's Rio Olympic games.

With 13 medals (six gold, six silver and one bronze medal), Kenya was 15th in world rankings, their best performance at the summer games.

Kenya's gold medalists were David Rudisha (800m), Eliud Kipchoge (marathon), Jemima Sumgong (marathon), Faith Kipyegon (1,500m), Conselsus Kipruto (3,000m steeplechase) and Vivian Cheruiyot (5,000m).

Athletes, who won medals in the Paralympic games, will also be honored at tomorrow's luncheon to be held at Nandi Bears Club.

"The event will be to celebrate the success of Team Kenya at the Rio Olympics. They were Africa's best ranked country, which calls for celebrations," said one of the organisers, Fred Kiptanui.

Lotto Foundation chairman Brian Waluchio said his company is committed to the development of the youth through sports.

"We are also very proud to have had the opportunity to support this crop of athletes who went to Rio and did wonders," he said.

He added that the presence of the medalists not only motivates and encourages younger athletes, but also brings joy to everyone associated with them.
