ARREST KIP KEINO? NO, NOT NOW Police will however ask him to share what he knows

Head of Kenya's Olympics committee Keino speaks during a Reuters interview inside his office in Kenya's capital Nairobi

Celebrated Kipchoge Keino, the President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, will not be arrested when he returns to the country, police sources say.

Yesterday, detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said Dr Keino would only be asked to share information he may have concerning the mismanagement of the Rio 2016 team.

The move comes even as speculation rose that the legendary Keino would be arrested after his colleagues in Nock –Stephen Arap Soi, James Chacha and FK Paul – were taken into custody in different police stations in Nairobi following the Rio mess.

A source familiar with the investigations told FeverPitch: “He (Kip Keino) will be required to share whatever information he has regarding the Nike kit and the Olympics campaign.”

Keino, 76, shocked many when he was quoted by BBC saying he did not know how Sprints coach John Anzrah got to Rio de Janeiro. Keino’s baffling interview has left many wondering  whether he is in charge of the Olympics body or he's just a figurehead.

The scandals in Rio threatens to erode Kenya’s pride in Dr Keino, who was feted by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach with Laurel Award for his outstanding achievement in social engagements. He remains in history as the first ever athlete to receive an Olympic Laurel Award.

Dr Keino left Rio for the US where he was attending a family function.

The arrests and confiscation of sports kits at Nock headquarters in Plaza 2000 along Mombasa Road came barely a week after The Standard on Sunday (on August 21) exposed the theft of the kits, with exclusive details from Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

The Standard on Sunday revealed Robert Lotwis, a Nike executive, had written to Nock demanding an explanation on how the kit was distributed.

“Dear F.K (Francis Paul, the Nock Secretary General). I have not heard back from you around any of the product issues I have emailed you about. I have sent you a list of products that was sent and you received.

“I don’t understand why I have athletes both here (in Rio) and back in Nairobi saying they did not receive product. I’m asking again for an explanation. I’ve also listed what each track (athletics) athlete should receive in a pack. I’ve also relisted below what was sent to Nock. Please respond with an explanation on why athletes are saying they are not getting all the products they should.”

He mailed invoices of the consignment, showing the quantities they shipped to Kenya.
