Face masks are an affordable and easy way to pamper and treat your skin at the same time. You could indulge in one as often as every few days, or monthly, depending on your skincare needs. You could choose to buy a mask, or make your own.

Different face masks cater to different skin concerns such as dryness, excess oil, fine lines, acne scars, and large pores. Everyone can benefit from a face mask. However, the key is in finding the right face mask for your skin. To do this, you need to first determine your skin type and skin issues. An aesthetician can help you with this.

1. Hydrating face masks

For dry or aging skin, the mask should be hydrating and gentle. Use ingredients that are rich in antioxidants and natural moisturisers. These include avocado, egg yolks, bananas, pawpaws, yogurt, raw honey, and oils such as olive, coconut or almond oil.

Avocados help to reduce inflammation and irritation, fine lines and wrinkles. Egg yolks contain A and B vitamins, and zinc which boosts immunity, aids in circulation, and heals the skin.

• Avocado and banana face mask: Mx an equal amount of banana and avocado with one teaspoon of olive oil. Apply on clean skin and rinse of after 20 minutes.

• Banana and egg yolk mask: Mix one banana with one egg yolk and one teaspoon of oil.

• Banana and honey mask: Mash a very ripe banana with one tablespoon of raw honey and one teaspoon of oil.

Rinse with warm water, pat dry and moisturise.

2. Skin brightening mask

There are many brightening masks to chose from, however, I have found this one to be among the best and most effective. This DIY mask contains four essential ingredients that work together to exfoliate, heal and brighten the skin. The first raw honey which is like medicine to the skin.

Honey balances the skin by helping it retain moisture and suppleness. If you have sensitive or inflamed skin, apply a small amount of honey to your jawline and wait a few minutes. If you feel itchy or uncomfortable, don’t use honey.

The second ingredient is lemon juice which contains anti-bacterial properties and is high in vitamin C. Lemon juice is an essential ingredient for brightening and evening out skin tone.

Turmeric which has been used as a beauty treatment for centuries helps reduce scarring and brightens the skin. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties thereby minimising breakouts.

The fourth ingredient oats, exfoliates while adding moisture.

Mix three teaspoons of oats, with one teaspoon raw honey, a squeeze of fresh lemon, and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Apply on clean skin and rinse of after 20 minutes.

3. Clarifying face mask

Go for mud or clay masks to naturally draw out excess oils. There are a few clay masks on the market, however, I have found bentonite clay to be among the best for oily skin. Use non metallic utensils to mix two teaspoons of clay with enough water to turn it into a thick paste.

Apply to clean skin and leave on for 15 minutes or until it’s nearly dry. If you leave this mask on for too long, it will start to draw moisture from your skin, leaving it too dry. When used correctly, this mask draws out impurities leaving your skin super clean.
