LSK: List prisoners as voters

Lawyers want the electoral commission to register prisoners as voters in readiness for the 2017 elections.

This is one of the recommendations in a 44-page report on the 2013 General Election released last week in Kisumu.

The report by Law Society of Kenya (LSK), titled Review of the Electoral Process in Kenya: An Appraisal of the 2013 General Election, said prisoners must exercise their democratic right.

The team recommended that measures be put in place to ensure a more inclusive registration to include prisoners, Kenyans in the diaspora and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) staff.

IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba said they will decide whether or not to register prisoners during the next voter registration phase. The current voter registration ends next month.

LSK also warned against the use of the Green Book as it "might be manipulated".
