Internship Programme to address staff deficit in Govt offices

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru

Nairobi: The State plans to recruit young graduates as management trainees in government offices to meet the increased demand for ICT staff.

The Presidential Digital Programme, administered by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT), is set to meet the increased need for ICT personnel in government offices.

"The programme is intended to help the government meet the increased demand for ICT staff while ensuring that the trainees gain experience for them to obtain meaningful employment on completion," read a notice from the ministry.

With this internship programme, the ministry hopes to position Kenya among global countries with exemplary ICT services: “The Presidential Digital Talent programme is envisioned as a means of building the next generation of globally competitive ICT leadership and technology talent that will transform Kenya through world class service delivery and citizenry.”

According to a report released in May 2015 at the World Economic Forum held in Cape Town, South Africa, Kenya was ranked position 86 globally and sixth in Africa ahead of Nigeria, Ghana and Egypt as one of the most Internet-Ready countries.

The report was guided by countries' research skills ability, socio-economic impact and the government's ability to use ICT in service dissemination.

Internet readiness is the ability of a country to maximize the use of ICT.

The government has already sought expression of interest from Human Resource Firms to provide competency based recruitment services to the programme for a period of six weeks.

To ensure transparency and fairness, all applications will be done online with the firms screening the application against a defined selection criterion using web based techniques.

Taking up the ICT docket in December 2015, the Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru vowed to maximize the sector's potentials in spearheading the country's economic agenda in line with vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
