MURANG’A: A boda boda operator is among the directors elected in the just-concluded Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) elections. John Karanu garnered 21,564 votes, beating Githambo Tea Factory Chairman Antony Gatimu in Tuesday's rotational elections.

Yesterday, Karanu was confirmed as a board member during an annual general meeting, where Simon Kairu was elected as the factory chairman.
Karanu said he will remain committed to serve small-scale tea farmers due to the respect accorded to him to win the directorship.
"I was vilified in the campaign since I was just a mere boda boda rider. I will prove that I went for the elective seat to demonstrate my leadership abilities," said Karanu.

Karanu and John Maingi replaced Gatimu and his vice chairperson Fresia Kamuri.

Kairu said he will unite all the leaders in Githambo and support development of the tea sector.
"I am committed in bringing together all the elected leaders in Kiharu to be part of the transformation agenda," said the newly elected chairman.
