Save coffee farmers from saboteurs

News

Coffee theft in Nyeri and other neighbouring counties has reached endemic levels with the Government appearing not concerned.

In a game that gives a strong hint of a major player or players who bribe at all police roadblocks, the Government stands accused of being an accessory to these well-planned heists that amount to systematic economic sabotage of people from Central Kenya.

It is now clear that farmers’ produce is being stolen and taken to either a top miller or millers without any response from the police, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Why can’t detectives storm suspected millers and find out the origin of stolen coffee? It is disgusting the levels at which breakdown of the rule of law has sunk to in this country.

With over Sh120 million of produce stolen so far, it is regrettable the Government is not taking steps to arrest the culprits.

The way the Jubilee Government has ignored coffee farmers is simply astounding. KPCU is on its death-bed, with millions of unpaid farmers’ money because of a decade-old foolish power struggle by cartels sponsored by the competition who have taken advantage of the power vacuum to vandalise milling machines belonging to the giant farmer’s body. Incredible. Nobody has been jailed for this vandalism.

President Uhuru Kenyatta does not appear to connect the dots and see that coffee brings in dollars and stabilises the shilling.
