Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama says they are looking forward to build on their emphatic 5-2 away win against Mauritius in the 2018 World Cup pre-qualifier when the two sides meet on Sunday in the return leg tie at the Kasarani Stadium.

Kenya hold a massive advantage ahead of Sunday’s clash and a win on aggregate will see the Bobby Williamson’s boys clash with Cape Verde in the second round. Stars beat Cape Verde 1-0 to qualify for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

In an interview with Feverpitch upon arrival yesterday, the Southampton midfielder said the Stade Anjalay’s performance is their turning point but urged his charges to remain focused as they seek a group stage qualification.

“I think we started well in the World Cup qualifier. It was a good game and everybody worked hard, we are happy with the result. It is not always that easy but I am happy to get away win and hopefully we will get more and bring confidence back to the team,” said Wanyama.

“Hopefully, the fans will come out and back us all the way. We want to work hard and try to get into the groups. This is football and any team is beatable and if we work hard we can get what we want. We will discuss about Cape Verde when we get there.”

Bobby Williamson was similarly excited after chalking up his first-ever win in a competitive match since being appointed as Harambee Stars coach on August 5 2014.

“It is always good to win away from home because it is hard to achieve that in this continent, but my players were very professional from the word go. We performed very well, though we conceded two easy goals it was a learning lesson for most of the players,” said Williamson.

“Our main concern was our preparations with some foreign-based players turning up just a day before the game but I expect a more improved performance on Sunday. It is a very young and competitive team with great dreams.”

Gor Mahia striker Michael Olunga who scored his second consecutive senior team goal and created an assist couldn’t hide his joy.

“Everyone is positive and since we had posted bad results in a couple of games before we wanted to make our fans proud. It feels great to score two goals in two matches, but there is still yet more to come,” said Olunga.

Commenting on Sunday’s return leg, the former Thika United man said: “Mauritius is a good side, but they are still beatable. That’s a stepping stone for us and we hope to finish the job in front of our home fans.” His club teammate, Harun Shakava, said he will draw confidence from his Harambee Stars’ debut goal. “It was a great feeling and I hope the goal will help me cement a place in the team,” said Shakava.
