Singer and Professor Evelyne Ndege has however stood the test of time, going ahead to use her musical gift not only in the gospel arena, but also at University levels where she is a voice coach at Daystar University.

“I have seen the industry transform from the Joy bringers era, to date when hits get churned out weekly.” Evelyne starts out while explaining how she started her music.

Born and raised in Kisii, Evelyn, the 4th born in a family of 8 admits that she received the perks of being the middle child including confidence which saw her delve into music.

Her prowess became evident while in Molo primary school. She would lead the children’s choir and take part in music festivals during which she got to the national levels.

In secondary school she discovered her music writing skill as she was able to write her own lyrics and perform her music before classmates. “In secondary school, I realized that music was a calling that I had to pursue so I fasted about it, and started writing soon after.”

Unlike many parents who will quickly dismiss their children from taking up music, Edna’s parents were supportive of her quest and even sent her to music school.

In 2000, she released her first album “Pale Msalabani” which was then followed by Botambe in 2001. While her music was steadily rising, Everlyn fell ill.

“I remember the most challenging time of my career as a time when I was so sick and my friends kept wondering what I had done to offend the almighty. As a gospel artiste I was put to test as many waited to see my Lord at work.” She narrates.

She recovered and released a testimonial with her album “He hideth me” in 2010. It was around the same time that she devoted her time to teaching music as a university lecturer.

She has also mentored upcoming youths in the gospel industry as she teaches music at Daystar University. “Music is not simply a calling. It’s my life and that is why I strive to teach youths that: Even with their degrees and doctorates, they should never forget to engage the gifts given to them by God,”
