We still won't increase teachers’ pay, Deputy President William Ruto insists

A day after teachers' unions suspended the five-week nationwide strike, the Government has ruled out any pay increment.

Deputy President William Ruto instead wants teachers to respect the responsibility and mandate of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in regard to remuneration of all public employees.

"SRC is a constitutional body with responsibility and mandate to harmonise salaries of all Government employees from the President to an office messenger. The stand of the Government is to respect recommendations of SRC," Ruto said.

The DP said salaries for all civil servants are awarded in respect to their qualifications and job description regardless of their offices.

Rule of law

"We aspire as the Government to ensure all civil servants get their due remuneration in an equitable manner. A degree holder in the education sector should get equal salary to an engineer having the same qualifications," he said.

Ruto called on all State employees to respect the rule of law and allow constitutional offices to discharge their mandate, adding that even the Judiciary should be respected as a way of upholding the rule of law.

Speaking at African Inland Church Mosoriot, Chesumei constituency, Nandi County during a fundraiser in aid of the church, Ruto raised concern over industrial unrest, saying it deprives the Government an opportunity to foster development.
