I was a ‘gumbaru’ student at KU - KUPPET Secretary General, Akelo Misori

Akelo Misori - KUPPET Secretary General

Learning at a fairly late age is no joke. I joined Kenyatta University in 1998 for a Bachelor’s degree in arts (psychology and religion). I was then the games master and a football coach at Migori Boys.

My favourite unit was School Administration — I had an eye for it, and met challenges in administration.

I didn’t enjoy psychology. I cannot stomach pretentious reasoning as presented by the historical ‘fathers of reason’ whose teachings the unit glorified. Prof Akelo Ayot, Prof Patel and the late Prof George Eshiwani were my favourite lectures. Their style of teaching would permanently cement knowledge in your head.

I would study till midnight to cope with the pressure as a teacher, coach, administrator and student.

Apart from books, you would find me in the field where our school based team at KU had the likes of KNUT Sec General Wilson Sossion whom we shared common units, Tim Oyucho a TSC lawyer, Boaz Owino the current Maranda High principal. So I was not alone in the “gumbaru” thing.

I was and still am a shy guy who never engaged in partying. But I would go out to watch soccer. Occasionally I listened to cool music. I never went out. Teachers’ politics run in my blood and I was the representative of teachers from Nyanza region.

My graduation day was the climax of my studies because it coincided with a teachers’ strike of 18th October 2002, which was also at its peak over the legal Notice 534 of 1997.

Akelo Misori graduated with a BA in Psychology & Religious studies from KU in 2002, and a Diploma in Education from Siriba Teacher’s College (now Maseno University).
