According to studies wedding cake makes you put on more weight than any other food...

We are gathered here today to join this couple in holy fat-rimony…

Scientists have found the average husband and wife pile on around four and a half pounds each after getting hitched.

It was originally thought being wed was better for your health than staying single.

But new research found married men have a body mass index of 26.3 and women 25.6 while average single males in the survey had BMIs of 25.7 and females 25.1, increasing the risk of heart disease. The normal range is between 18.5 and 25.

The study was carried out across Europe, including Britain, by Berlin’s Max Planck Institute.

Research chief Professor Ralph Hertwig said: “Our study found marriage and certain changes in behaviour within that context are related to nutrition and body weight.”

The survey, published in Social Science and Medicine magazine, revealed married couples ate better than singles but did less sport and exercise.

Fellow researcher Prof Jutta Mata from the University of Basel, said: “Our findings indicate couples are not healthier in every respect, as has been assumed.”
