Kiambu liquor traders allowed to sue State and MPs

NAIROBI: Some liquor traders in Limuru and Kiambu towns have been allowed to challenge the closure of their businesses by area legislators.

High Court Judge George Odunga allowed Anastasia Munyi and others to institute proceedings to compel MPs Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), John Kiragu (Limuru) and Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson Njenga to reopen their businesses.

Ms Munyi was aggrieved by the move by the politicians to forcibly close their work premises after a crackdown was ordered on the production and sale of second generation drinks by President Uhuru Kenyatta on June 24.

Munyi said she was humiliated and harassed in the presence of her neighbours and police at Kerwa and intimidated by Ichungwa during the operation. The court heard that her stock was burnt. She was given Sh5,000 and ordered to move out of Kerwa in Kikuyu Constituency to her native Embu County.
