The First Lady of Siaya County believes that the county has a lot of unexplored potential, which she likened to a virgin.

“Siaya has been a virgin waiting to be deflowered, but with what I have seen here this weekend, the Obama Sevens is going to be the next big thing in the country. Eighty per cent of the former and current Kenyan internationals come from this blessed county. This is the proudest moment in my life because rugby is back home and we are looking forward to more good things,” said First Lady Rosella Rasanga who was the chief guest at the event.

And as President Barack Obama was in Nairobi for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, Obama Sevens was busy breaking the virginity of his ancestral homeland, Siaya County.

Obama Sevens tournament director and ambassador Benjamin Ayimba said that, “We had good attendance despite having a few hiccups. We still hope to partner with the county government in next year’s tournament to promote the game. Our hope is that President Obama will be able to grace it now as private citizen next year.”

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology grounds which were a beehive of activities, didn’t just produce fireworks on the pitch, but also attracted a crowd of revellers and fans for the after party.

The crowd went wild when Rosemary Odinga, daughter of opposition leader, Raila Odinga, took to the stage to dance. “Being a Siaya resident, I am proud of the county government and all those involved in organising the event. I promise to come back next year and with my support, I expect it to be bigger and better,” promised Rosemary.

Sports commissioner Gordon Oluoch assured the organisers of national government and Kenya Rugby Union’s support in the upcoming editions.
