Church accountant arrested because of Facebook name

mistaken FB identity

Police may have arrested a church accountant wrongfully after he claimed his is a case of mistaken identity, because of he shares a Facebook name with the person police were looking for.

Patrick Gikunda, an accountant at the Methodist Church, was charged with obtaining goods worth Sh7 million from Ruth Omusolo by false pretence on different dates in 2014.

It is alleged that the accused received assorted stationery, including pens, carbon papers, envelopes, paper clips and glue from the complainant.

Police say that Ruth met the suspect following a tender advertisement calling for suppliers to supply certain goods. The court heard that the complainant, who had expressed interest in the business, visited the indicated offices in the ad in Karen accompanied by her husband.

Having carried required documentation, she allegedly met the accused who promised to get back to her. It is said that she later received an email from Gikunda, informing her that her application was successful and that she would be called upon to deliver required items whenever the need arises.

The prosecution said that Ruth was on October 15, 2014 asked to deliver office stationery, which was followed by other requests. Gikunda reportedly promised to pay her after each delivery. Ruth claims she later learnt that Gikunda and others not before the court had duped her when she visited the Karen office unannounced because her calls were not being answered.

In his defence, Gikunda said: “Police arrested me because I share a name with the real suspect. I am innocent, I don’t know anything about the deal,” he claimed. The matter will be mentioned on August 6.
