AFC Leopards charman Allan Kasavuli resigns

AFC Leopards chairman Allan Kasavulli has finally resigned following financial pressures at the club.

Kasavulli has handed the club to former chairman Alex Ole Magelo who will head an interim committee to oversee the day to day functions of the club.

The fate of other elected club officials except for George Aladwa (Secretary General) and Timothy Lilumbi (Organising Secretary) is unknown.

“I have resigned because the club is making a transition into becoming a co-operate entity and have handed over the club to Ole Magelo. The functions of the Secretary General and that of the Organising Secretary are still going on,” said Kasavuli in a phone interview.

Magelo who is the current speaker of the Nairobi County government served in a similar capacity two years ago but did not contest Kasavuli.

Romours of Kasavuli’s resignation had been in the air since Wednesday morning before he finally came out to confirm the same.

Kasavulli defended his tenure at the club and denied he had failed. “This was the right move for me to make because now those who are incharge can talk to other sponsors as equals.

“Regarding my tenure, I did not fail.  We won the GOtv Cup and finished second in the league as well as the Nile Basin tournament. Majority of the current players were recruited by myself using my own resources,” he said.

On whether he will want to return to the club again, he revealed:”I am a life member of the club and once the new company comes into place, I will be a member of the board.”

Kasavulli admitted that the working conditions at the club were difficult especially after shirt sponsors Mumias Sugar withdrew their support.

“It was difficult working with other club officials members. There was division and could not take the club forward.”

His resignation comes just one day after club captain Martin Imbalambala was in the news over reports that he had been locked out of his house over unpaid arrears.

Imbalambala together with the other players have not been paid for three months. AFC Leopards players have gone on strike atleast seven times protesting non-payment of their dues.
