Closure of NGOs not a solution to curbing terrorism

It was very unfortunate that several non-governmental organizations were shut down and their accounts frozen following claims that they were funding terrorism activities. It is my view that they should have sought other means to tame outrageous NGOs or organizations funding terrorism.

Unfortunately majority of these organizations have been hope to many marginalized communities in Northern Kenya. Jubilee government is on course to subject citizens from these regions to difficult life since basic facilities will not be within their reach. You all agree with me that most Kenyan problems are best solved amicably by the same NGOs that are now being portrayed as arch enemies by the Kenyan government.

Furthermore, my great worry is the fact that majority of these NGOs are of European origin thus raising questions. Is this a message that the jubilee administration is sending to western countries that they are not needed anymore? The government should have instead established the activities of these organizations right from the grass roots. Politicizing the issue worsens the situation since every political party is doing so for its own interests.

Jubilee administration should understand that Kenya is a third world country as such it is vulnerable to an array of problems. We still need these NGOs because had we not been needy, they would not be in our midst. Had it been that Kenya is developed, the decision would have been a plus, but at the moment it is inappropriate and unnecessary. Let the government consider the fate of millions of malnourished children in these regions in the absence of these NGOs.

Most importantly, the government in liaison with all stakeholders should discuss their differences and brief the NGOs on any new regulations or guidelines. No one wants to live in a society that is always worried of what might happen due to insecurity.

I fully support the government’s efforts to tame terrorism but the methods to curb insecurity need be realistic.
