‘Any Time is Tea Time Marathon left us thirsty’

The Tea for Health Marathon went down in Kericho last week and saw two winners bag Sh1.5 million each. Barnabas Bii and Geaorgina Rono both clocked the fastest times in the men and women categories respectively to bag the jackpot amounts.

But that was not all. The event had a number of sideshows. First, all through the first eight in both categories, there were no cheers from the home crowd. Reason? None of the winners came from Kericho.

Despite hosting the marathon, the top positions were shared by athletes from Marakwet and Nandi. The women’s 42-kilometre winner Georgina Rono was as well a first-time winner in any marathon. From conversations around the ground, the home crowd was not pleased.

The Nairobian spoke to one Silas Yegon who said they expected more. “You see the turnout? How can you cheer someone you don’t know. Our home runners were too lazy here,” he complained.

Also, one of the main attractions was a man in a coat that covered more than the cold. The faded, stripped, long cotton coat was quite revealing. Despite refusing to speak to us about the coat, his was a one-man show, as anywhere he went, kids and adults alike had something to smile about.

The organiser, Senator Joy Gwendo, told The Nairobian that she counted it as a successful event altogether.

“We are grateful to AFFA under the stewardship of the Director General Mr Alfred Busolo, his prescience in the scene saw a Cooperative team, a well-organised marathon and a successful even that also brought together different agriculture stakeholders including the PS of fisheries Professor Ntiba, who was the chief guest. NCPB director Terer and host governor Chepkwony,” said Gwendo.

The marathon was part of the ‘Anytime is Tea Time’ campaign run by AFFA and Media 63.
