Mututho: Mismanagement, poor planning behind cholera outbreak

NAKURU: The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Chairman John Mututho has blamed poor sanitation for the increased cases of cholera in the county.

This came after two cholera cases were reported in Naivasha with 15 deaths already confirmed in the vast county.

Following the rise in numbers, Mr Mututho lashed out at the county government warning that these numbers could rise further if swift action is not taken.

The former Naivasha MP said that Nakuru has lost its glory as the cleanest town in the country and attributed the current woes to poor planning and management.

"Years back, Nakuru was dubbed as the cleanest town in the country but due to mismanagement, people are dying from cholera which is associated with poor sanitation," he said.

Addressing the press in Naivasha, while condoling relatives who had lost their kin to the ailment, Mututho challenged Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to urgently address the issue of cholera in the county.

"It is shameful that in this day and age, we are losing our residents to cholera. If the governor has failed he and his team should resign," he said.

Speaking separately, Naivasha Sub-county Public Health Officer Dr Oren Ombiro confirmed that the second case of cholera in the area had been reported.

He said that a middle aged woman from Kabati estate was admitted at Naivasha Sub-county Referral Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The doctor, however, said three other cases referred to the facility were negative. He assured locals that public health officers are working to stem the outbreak.
