Two terror suspects including 16-year-old girl remanded for ten days

Kenya: A Nairobi court has granted the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) 10 days to continue holding in custody two women linked to terror.

Damaris Wanjiru Njenga and a 16-year-old girl appeared before a Milimani Magistrate Court Wednesday.

The prosecution alleged that the minor is believed to have been radicalized and trained in Somalia and she sneaked into the country.

Wanjiru on the other hand is said to be in constant communication with known Al Shabaab members who are at large.

Through counsel Dancun Ondimu, ATPU told the court that Wanjiru is a manager at Bemwa Realtors Company limited, a company that allegedly finances terrorism activities within the country.

The ATPU said the suspects are intended to be charged with terrorism related offenses once the investigations are complete.

The court heard that Wanjiru was arrested on May 5, 2015 in Giwa House within the City Centre in Nairobi while the minor was arrested on May 4, 2015 at Juja Town.

The minor is said to be a former Form Two student at Precious Blood Kagwe Girl's High School where she disappeared in June last year and resurfaced earlier this year.

After resurfacing, the suspect insisted that she be taken to a Muslim school and through the intelligence report, it is believed that she was radicalized and joined Al shabbab terror group in Somalia.

It is alleged that she sneaked into the country to carry out attacks and that her associates are at large.

"The terror suspect is yet to be charged with terrorism related offences because investigations are ongoing," said Ondimu

He added that suspect is a flight risk and also dangerous to the security of the nation if released on bond.

The ATPU made an application that the suspects to be remanded at Kileleshwa Police Station to enable them arrest their associates.

They added that there is need to make recovery of transaction records and critically analyze call records from Safaricom Kenya

"Wanjiru will assist in recovering the records and she is also a flight risk if released on bond and this will jeopardise the ongoing investigations," said Ondimu.

They are expected in court on May 15.
