High heels not for every woman: How women tip-toe like newborn antelopes in name of fashion

There is a bunch of women who the inventor of high-heeled footwear didn’t have in mind when designing heels, but who insist on putting them on, causing them to stumble around like newborn antelopes.

Someone needs to tell our younger sisters that not everything that is in fashion is meant for them. Look, fashion will throw all sorts of attire for many to try out, but this does not necessarily mean that you have to wear everything you deem fashionable.

It is a no brainer that big cities are a melting point of fashion revolution and trial and error with the huge population of college- going women.

Last weekend, I was in town minding my business when I witnessed a girl almost break her leg on one of the busy streets in Nairobi.

The girl was tip-toeing (sorry, walking) in some very high, wedge-heeled shoes when she missed a step and collapsed very awkwardly on the pavement.

Luckily, as they often do, these college girls walk in groups of threes or fours. That is how I escaped being sucked into a freakish walking accident.

But as I walked away, I could help but notice that the wedge heel was all the rave among her friends. Who told girls that they must ape Kim Kardashian and Rihanna? Look here girls, just because it looks good on your friend it will not necessarily look good on you.

This blanket approach to issues by our women must cease. Your fashion sense can be inspired by your background back in Nyeri, Migori, Isiolo or Makueni and need not be prompted by European red carpet events.

 Can’t survive stampede

For starters, you cannot wear high heels and still use public transport. Suppose the matatu, as they often do, drops you two or three kilometres beyond your desired stage? Or what if  there is a stampede in downtown Nairobi? Will you look your mother in the eye, that is if you survive the stampede, and tell her that the reason she has had to sell her cows and goats to meet your medical bills is because you had chosen to try on some high-heeled shoes you saw in a soap opera?

 Beautiful enough

Girls, you have been misled to believe that you are not beautiful enough. That is why you have to lay a whole ‘slab’ of foundation powder on your face before you can venture out of the house.

Look, you have also been misled to believe that speaking your local dialect is a manifestation of your backwardness.

You don’t have to behave as though you were born in the central business district. The only people born in city centres are, unfortunately, street children. Yes, this is the only category of people who I can expect not to know their shags.

But girl, if you have a place you go to visit some old folks over Christmas, these are your people and you ought to speak their language whether you choose to visit them in high heels or not.

Girls, simply because you have a CV and you saw it on TV does not mean it has to be copied and pasted.
