Liverpool legend Steve McManaman: Manchester United are '£150m away' from winning Premier League title

Manchester United are £150million away from winning the Premier League title, according to Steve McManaman.

The former Liverpool midfielder believes that despite having a surge of form in the second half of this season, the Red Devils are still one big spending spree away from reclaiming their perch at the top of the table.

United were thumped 3-0 by Everton on Sunday, marking back-to-back league defeats for the first time since Louis van Gaal took over as manager of the club.

BT Sport football expert Steve McManaman was speaking on the channel’s news and debate show Football Tonight, and said that teams tailing off towards the end of the season has helped United claim their place in the top four.

He said: "I think they are miles away, £150million away from winning the title. I have been disappointed with the way they have played. I think the fact that they played so well against Liverpool and Tottenham has rescued them.

"I expected them to play much better and be closer, as in they have never ever been anywhere near challenging for the title this year. They have got a little bit closer at the end of the season as other teams have tailed off.

"So I expected them to be closer playing a better standard of football.

"To have no European football this year has helped them considerably."

McManaman has also been talking about Chelsea, who are set to be crowned Premier League champions in the coming weeks.

The Blues were slammed for playing "boring" football against Arsenal, which forced a reaction out of manager Jose Mourinho.

McManaman does believe that playing Chelsea's way is uneasy on the eye but he would love to play in their team - because every footballer wants to play in a winning team, regardless of how you win.

He said: "Bit of a turn off? Yes. Would I want to play in this side? Yes I would, I would love to play in this side, because if it means you are winning the Barclays Premier League, I would love to play in this side.

"Are they a turn off? I think they are. I admire Chelsea and I respect Chelsea, but I don’t like the way they play I must admit. I think recent games where they just got results, I think the Champions of this country should have a little bit more about them.

When I look around Europe and see how other teams play their style of football. I think Real Madrid fans wouldn’t put up with that type of performance. I think Barcelona wouldn’t and I certainly think Bayern Munich wouldn’t.

"If you looked at Owen Hargreaves' wonderful documentary about Bayern Munich which he did recently. He sat next to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rummenigge said when Bayern were pulverized by Barcelona 5-0 at the Nou Camp, he said that is how we should play football and he started to change it.

"And they do play football like that and I think the champions of this country should play football like that."
