Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo elected Kenya's Public Accounts Committee chairman

Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo has been elected to head the newly constituted Public Accounts Committee .

Nairobi, Kenya: Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo (ODM) has been elected Public Accounts Committee chairman. Gumbo takes over PAC from the Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba.

The Rarieda MP had 13 votes, Suba MP John Mbadi 8 votes, Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden 4, Mwatate MP Raphael Mwadime 1 vote while Tongaren MP Simiyu Eseli had stepped down in favour of Gumbo.

At the same time Kipkelion West MP Jackson Rop was elected vice chairman of PAC.  

The election of the chairman and the deputy is seen as the first move in redeeming the committee's tainted image following bribery claims being probed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Apart from the Chair and his deputy, the new committee comprises Abdikadir Aden (Balambala), Kanini Kega (Kieni), David Bowen (Marakwet East) Timothy Bosire (Kitutu Masaba), Eseli Simiyu (Tongareni), Joseph Manje (Kajiado North), Jude Njomo (Kiambu), Joel Onyancha (Bomachoge), Kareke Mbiuki (Maara), Gonzi Rai (Kinango).

Others are Fathua Mahbub (Mandera), Julius Melly (Tinderet); Mathias Robi (Kuria West), Stephen Manoti (Bobasi), John Mbadi (Suba); Katatha Maweu (Kangundo); Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul); Manson Nyamweya (South Mugirango); Alice Chae (Nyamira); Mwadime Andrew (Mwatate); Jessica Mbalu (Kibwezi East); Charles Geni (North Mugirango).

Five members from the previous committee Ababu Namwamba (Budalang'i), his deputy Cecily Mbarire (Runyenjes), Ahmed Abbas (Ijara), James Bett (Kesses) and Omondi Anyanga (Nyatike) were barred from the new team after the disciplinary committee found them culpable of breaching the privileges of the House.
