Wenger hoping it's 13th time lucky as he looks to end Jose Mourinho hoodoo

Arsene Wenger insists he can make it 13th time lucky against Jose Mourinho on Sunday.

Gunners boss Wenger has yet to beat bitter rival Mourinho in 12 previous Premier League meetings with Chelsea winning seven and the other five have been drawn.

But Wenger says Arsenal - on the back of an eight game winning run in the Premier League - says they can finally end the Mourinho hoodoo.

Wenger said: “I think we have not always lost in 12 attempts. We have been close. Having said that, the result on Sunday will just be down to the performance on the day. We are on a good run and we have an opportunity at home to beat them and we want to take it.

“We have a good run of form and good belief and solidarity. We have passed many tests recently when we were questioned. We have another test on Sunday that we want to pass.

“Chelsea's strengths are they have been very efficient on counter attacks and set-pieces as well. We have to nullify their strengths.”

Chelsea manager Mourinho has one of football’s fiercest rivalries with Wenger after branding the Frenchman a “specialist in failure” last season and a “voyeur” during his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Wenger refused to discuss his bitter relationship with Mourinho in an attempt not to stoke up further bad feeling.

Wenger said: “I do not want to talk about that. What is interesting for people is when the game starts at 4pm we have a great game. It is not about the relationship between the managers.”

Wenger is without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mikel Arteta is in full training but won’t be fit and Per Mertesacker is rated at '50-50' because of an ankle injury while Brazilian defender Gabriel is likely to start in his place.
