Probe on Garissa University massacre starts, CS Joseph Nkaissery says

NAIROBI: A team has been appointed to investigate how and why the Garissa University College massacre happened even after security officials there had been alerted.

The team headed by Western Regional Co-ordinator James ole Serian is supposed give its findings and recommendations to Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery in two weeks. Sources said the minister intends to suspend, interdict or even force arraignment of some of the security managers in Garissa County over the April 2 incident.

The team spent Monday and yesterday interrogating the county security team in a bid to establish how the situation was handled before, during and after the siege.

"You will see action soon. It seems some people slept on their job and that is going to come out soon with serious action from the Government," said an official aware of the probe.

Some 148 people, including 142 students were killed in the attack. It has since emerged that the county security team had been warned in time and they even visited the college.

On the day of the attack, there were supposed to be four armed police officers on duty but only two were present. One of the officers told the team he escaped the scene after the first attack while the second one said he engaged the attackers and after he ran out of the 20 bullets he had, he fled.

It has since emerged the attackers may have planned the ambush for days after investigators realised that they had bought foodstuffs.efeat those who preach intolerance,” the President said.

He said he will work with the church and all Kenyans to root out corruption and terrorism.

“If we overcome, the future of this nation is not only guaranteed, but secured,” he added.

The President congratulated the PCEA church for holding peaceful elections for its leadership, adding that this was a good lesson for other religious institutions as well as the whole country to emulate.

The PCEA general assembly is held after every three years where new leaders are elected.
