Kenya: Jubilee wants governors to step aside over corruption

Kenya: The Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) now wants governors who have been mentioned in the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) report to step aside.

JAP says all governors allied to its coalition should heed the President's call and resign to pave way for impartial investigations.

Nakuru County JAP Chairman James Karimi urged the county heads to stop using the Constitution as a scapegoat. Mr Karimi said an audit was necessary and Kenyans needed to know how their taxes were being spent.

"Governors should follow Cabinet secretaries and senior Government officers who have stepped aside so that investigations into allegations of corruption can be done without interference," he said.

Karimi was addressing the Press after a meeting with JAP party leaders drawn from all the 47 counties at Jaza Resort in Naivasha.

While reading a joint communiqué, Karimi said the party needs to be strengthened if it is to compete with other parties in the next general elections.

He said the recent loss of the Kajiado Central seat to Coalition for Reform and Democracy was an eye opener, adding that some national officials need to resign to allow for its re-branding.

Lost faith

"We know some interim national officials messed up with the manner in which the campaigns were conducted and time has come to tell them to bow out," he said.

Nyanza region Jubilee co-ordinator Zuberi Odhiambo said party members had lost faith with some national officials.

"We are issuing a stern warning to the interim officials that they need to move and let new faces lead the party," he said.
