Over 460,000 people in Turkana County affected by drought

TURKANA, KENYA: Over 460,000 people in Turkana County have been affected by drought.

Speaking to The Standard, the chief officer in charge of Public Service, decentralised administration and disaster management, Rtd Major Daniel Ing'olan said that the people most affected are those from Turkana North, Turkana West and Loima.

He added that some people from Turkana South are less affected stating that those in Turkana East are mostly affected because of the insecurity in the area.

"The drought situation as we speak is at an alarming stage. The people that are mostly affected are those in Turkana North, Turkana West and Loima Sub Counties. Those in Turkana South are not affected so much but in Turkana East, it is mostly because of insecurity. Animals in those areas are confined to secure places and this leads to depletion of feeds," said the chief officer.

Mr. Ingolan added that the county government is working at ensuring that the people and animals affected by the drought are cushioned.
