Over 50 families left homeless after fire raze down houses in Nyeri

Nyeri, Kenya: Over 50 families lost their property after fire razed down their homes Thursday in Kiawara slums in Nyeri Town.
Residents tried to put the blaze for several hours before the Nyeri fire engine finally arrived at the scene during the 10am incident.

Amina Muthoni Gicheru ,60, lost her household belonging and was distraught over the destruction blaming the slow response of the fire department.

"I have lost all my documents, my medicine and everything I own and I am appealing to the government to buy new fire engines and help me rebuild my life," Ms Gicheru said.

According to Eric Makara, who was one of the residents at the scene, the fire engine came to the site half an hour late and had engine problem.

"The fire engine that came to put out the fire experienced engine problem and we were forced to put out the fire," Makara said.

He requested the county government to use emergency funds to help the victims to buy the lost household items.

"We have 50 families who have no place to go tonight and have no food or clothes and the members of the county assembly and the area MP should step in to save the situation," Makara said.

No one was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
