Chavakali High receive 'Y' as neighbouring schools record improved performance

VIHIGA: A sombre mood engulfed Chavakali High School, Vihiga County, with teachers and students assembling in small groups after they learned that they could not access their last year's KCSE results.

Journalists and parents were equally locked out of the school compound, with the security man saying he was acting on orders not to allow anyone in the school.

In a post on the social media, one of the parents said the school had communicated to them that the results had some technical problems.

"Parents of the 2014 candidates, the KCSE results seem to have a problem, kindly be patient as the school waits for details, Principal Chavakali High School," a parent, Namuleyi Wasike, posted.

It was alleged that the school had irregularities in Mathematics and English, which are core subjects that affected all the 317 students who sat for the examination.

Parents who flocked the school to confirm what was happening said they had sent the short message to inquire on their children's results, and the responses they were getting were evoking fear and anguish.

"I have sent the SMS five times, and all the times I have got a 'Y' back. Initially, I thought I had mistaken the index number but when I sent it two more times, it brought the same results. It is sad considering that we were expecting the best results ever," a parent who talked to The Standard, but wished not to be named, said.

In the previous year, Chavakali surprised many when it emerged on the national scene, triumphantly moving from position 102 in the 2012 exams to position 8 in 2013 nationally.

IMPROVED PERFORMANC

In stark contrast, other schools in Vihiga allowed their students to go to the streets to celebrate their improved performances.

Mudasa Academy, Mbale High School, Nyang'ori High School, Keveye Girls Secondary School and Bunyore Girls, all registered improved performances.

Students of Mbale Boys, Kaimosi Boys and Mudasa Academy paralysed services in the major towns in the county as they celebrated.

Mudasa Academy, one of the best performing schools in the county, produced a mean score of 9.826. School Principal Velma Mudanyi said all the 46 students had performed exceptionally well.

"We have 8 A-, 23 B+, 14 B plain, and 1 B-, showing the level of commitment the school has towards improving the academic standards in the region," she said.
