Five family members hospitalised after robbers shot and wounded them in South B, Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: Five members of a family were shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in a robbery incident at their house in Nairobi's South B Estate.

The victims, who are of Asian origin, were in their house in Golden Gate Estate of South B at about 3am when a gang of five struck and stole jewellery, cash and mobile phones.

The gang shot at them randomly, injuring them in the legs and stomach before escaping.

They had earlier on poisoned the family dog by feeding it with meat that had been laced with poison.

Guards at the compound said the gang used a ladder to scale a perimeter wall into the compound before they broke into the house and grabbed the valuables.

"They first poisoned a dog that was bothering them before they made their way into the house where they shot the five victims after they resisted demands that they open the door into their bedroom," said a guard at the gated compound.

Police were informed of the shooting long after it had happened.

A guard said some of the family members, who have been in abroad, had arrived for a visit. The guard added that the house was raided three years ago when the family was away and property stolen.

Makadara OCPD Nehemia Lagat said the victims were rushed to the Mater Hospital where they were admitted in stable condition.

"We believe the motive was to rob the victims but investigations are ongoing," said Lagat.
