National youth service officers injured in West Pokot accident

Eldoret, Kenya: Two National Youth Service officers were Sunday injured when a truck they were traveling in got involved in an accident at Kamatira along Kapenguria – Lodwar highway.

Confirming the incident, West Pokot County traffic commandant Denis Kaburu said the officers were heading to Lodwar to drill water when the truck ferrying the driller lost control at the steep slopes.

He said the brakes of the truck failed causing it to veer off the road and eventually plunging in a valley on one side of the road at around 6:20 am.

Kaburu said the injured were rushed to Kapenguria district hospital and disclosed that the truck driver did not sustain any injuries.

The officer disclosed that one of the victims had a broken limb from the tragedy adding that all were rushed to hospital for check-up.

He said the driver of the ill-fated truck was new in the area and was not well familiar with the steep slopes of Kamatira which require motorists to drive slowly along the section of the road.

"This year we have had five accidents and the involved drivers are new, we need to place road signs there since local drivers have not been victims as such, those often involved are new on the route," said Kaburu.

He added that the truck had a mechanical defect and the driver had spent some time at Makutano trading center in Kapenguria trying to mend the clutch.

According to Kaburu, the driver of the lorry tried to apply brakes but they failed and hence he resorted to engaging the gears.
