Do you need make-up primers?

You’ve probably heard about or even used a make-up primer, but may not be aware of the benefits.

Many primers claim to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, fight acne, and provide sun protection.

Foundation primers make any product glide on smoothly and last for hours. But did you know that there are primers for other products as well?

1. Foundation primers

Cyclomethicone, one of the main ingredients found in skin base primers, is a silicone grease reducer.

The primer acts as a natural shield which helps the make-up stay in place for longer.

Retinol palmitate reduces flaking and restores suppleness. Tocopherol acetate is a skin conditioning antioxidant, while Dimethicone cross polymer is a skin protectant.

Foundation primers seal pores thereby creating a smooth, even surface for make-up. Most primers are non-comedogenic, which means that they won’t irritate your skin or clog pores. This is therefore a good product for those with sensitive skin or acne. They also make the skin appear more youthful. Primers can be used on any skin type or colour.

Mascara primer

These primers claim to provide fuller, longer lashes, and extend the wear of mascara. They also condition, moisturise and promote healthy lashes. Lash primers are a good way of avoiding flaking and smudging of mascara.

2. Lip primer

A good lip primer will lock in moisture, provide a smooth base for lipstick, and protect the lips. It acts as a foundation for the lips and makes lipsticks or other lip cosmetics last longer. Another type of lip primer comes in pencil form and may be used to line the edges of the lips to prevent lipstick feathering.

3. Eye shadow primer

This primer acts as a canvas for colour by allowing the eye-shadow to glide on smoothly and stay in place for longer. Primers also allow the eye-shadow to be true to colour, not a dull imitation.

Primers can be worn on their own without make-up. They will give you that fresh no-make-up look, but with polished smooth skin. Remember, that all primers are worn as a base for make-up therefore you should apply them before the make-up. My MAC foundation primer is one of my best beauty buys.
