President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Meru visit brings town to a standstill

Meru, Kenya: Business came to a standstill as President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and other dignitaries, toured Nkubu town.

The President’s Kenya Air Force plane touched down at Marimba, near Nkubu town, at 11am, where he was received by the Deputy President, who had landed ten minutes earlier.

All roads were closed to allow the the Head of State's entourage easy passage.

The Meru-Nkubu highway was closed for the duration the President was in the area. Matatus and other vehicles leaving Meru town, had to stop to give way for the Head of State.

Traffic in Meru town was heavy and businesses were forced to close. People had to walk in and out of town, as no vehicle was allowed on the road. It was a sea of humanity when the President arrived at the Gakoromone Market.

He was given a rousing welcome as Imenti North MP and his constituents poured into town in large numbers. Human and vehicle traffic competed for space as they snaked their way into the market, and Huduma Centre at the Post Office and Makutano, near Meru town.

Ululations and claps rent the air as residents cheered Kenyatta and Ruto, who were accompanied by Meru Governor Peter Munya, Senator Kiraitu Murungi, and Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki.

“I was headed for Nkubu but the delay has caused me to cancel the trip. But it is alright. I was eager to see Kenyatta and Ruto. Their trip has cost a few thousand shillings, but I am also happy because they have brought us good news,” said Mary Kathambi, a Maua resident.
