Manchester United want to sell Nani but £100,000-a-week wages could put off potential buyers

Manchester United will try to find a buyer for Nani this summer - despite the winger claiming he has been given assurances about his Old Trafford future.

The big concern for the club’s money men is that the Portuguese international’s wages of around £100,000-a-week will put off potential suitors, report the Manchester Evening News.

Nani is currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon, where he has gone some way to restoring his reputation after seeing his career grind to a halt in the Premier League.

Despite acknowledging his improved form this season, United are still determined to find him a permanent move in the summer.

The 28-year-old has three-and-a-half years left on his current contract, but does not figure in Louis van Gaal’s plans.

That leaves United facing up to the prospect of having to offer Nani a settlement if they want him off their books at the end of the season.

Alternatively he could go out on loan again.

United are preparing to spend heavily again in the summer, with Van Gaal set to be handed another budget of around £150m to sign the world’s top players.

It will also see a number of the Dutchman’s squad shown the door - but Nani claimed over the weekend that United still want to keep him.

“The club know my value and I know they want me to stay,” he said.

“It was me who made the choice to leave the club and it was a good decision by me because I knew if I stayed one more season at Old Trafford, it would be very hard for me.

“I just need someone to believe in me, trust me and my qualities, and give me an opportunity to show them on the pitch.

“It’s an experience I wanted a lot and needed as well because the last two seasons at Manchester United I had so many injuries and I was very upset with a lot of things that happened to me.

“I was missing my family and friends and I wanted something new.

“The only opportunity I had to be happy, and Manchester United to be happy as well, was this one.”

United are planning a significant overhaul of players between now and the start of next season.

As well as Nani, they are looking to offload Anderson and goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard.

Darren Fletcher is set to leave the club this month, while Wilfried Zaha and Nick Powell are also expected to depart.
