GARDY AND JOSEPHINE

FIRST DATE

Gardy: I remember it very well, it was on September 15, 2012. I took her to Wimpy in town. She was fine with the modest setting, which was a score for her. Prior to that, I had known her as a friend for more than five months before asking her out.

Josephine: When he asked me out, I had mixed feelings: I did not want to be in a relationship that wasn’t for a lifelong commitment. I had to make this known to him before we wasted each other’s time.

THE PROPOSAL

Gardy: For more than a year, she had been asking if I would propose to her before our wedding. I was going to; but I was keen to make it solely my idea. In May last year, I went down on my knee before friends and family and asked for her hand in marriage. She was like: “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!”

Josephine: I have always fancied being engaged. I kept asking him to plan for it. I gave up waiting at some point because I did not want to be disappointed. To my surprise, he had something planned and I loved it.

THE DRAMA

Gardy: The four of us couldn’t quite agree on how to cut down the budget. We kept fidgeting with the idea of having fewer guests but it was difficult, considering that we expected relatives to come in droves.

Josephine: The salon lady messed us so bad. She was missing on the eve to the wedding. Her phone was off and her assistant was nowhere to be found. We had to get somebody else to do the job.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Gardy: My wife is a Nandi with some Luhya traits: I thought I wouldn’t be able to lift her in my arms. When the moment came, I picked her up with ease and kissed her passionately. My arms ached a little bit later. It was worth it though.

Josephine: The time my parents walked me down the aisle and handed me over to the man I love. I also cherish when we exchanged vows and rings. The deal was sealed.

ANTONY AND LILIAN

FIRST DATE

Antony: It was in 2010. I told her I wanted to take her somewhere but I didn’t like the way she was dressed. We went to Thika but after she changed into new clothes.

Lilian: The day before, Antony asked me to dress up because he was taking me out. I didn’t think it was a serious thing, so I decided to put on a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, rubber shoes and a head gear. He threatened that he wouldn't take me out if I didn’t change into new clothes. I got something better and off we went.

THE PROPOSAL

Antony: In October last year, while visiting her home, I lay on the sofa to rest and unfortunately the ring, which was hidden in my jacket pocket fell off. Having seen it already, she came over, hugged me and got the ring. That’s not what I had planned.

Lilian: He first asked me to marry him via text. That was a month after we had begun dating. My answer was ‘Yes’, but I kept asking him for the ring, which came years later. When he came over at my parents’ house a month to the wedding, the ring fell out from his jacket. I finally got the ring.

THE DRAMA

Antony: The wedding was to start at 10am. We kept waiting for the ladies to arrive but signs were they’ve been held back. I didn’t like the idea that ‘aunties’ may demand for something to release the girls. Had they stayed longer, I would have gone to get my wife by myself. I was so happy when I saw her walk down the aisle towards the dais.Lilian: The salon lady was nowhere to be found on the eve of the wedding. She had done her job halfway and was supposed to finish only for her phone to go off. She did not even make an effort to look for us. We had to get a different hairdresser.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Antony: The church service was swift and fast. Generally, the day seemed to pass quickly - as I had hoped.

Lilian: Vowing to love and cherish each other through thick and thin. It was a covenant we made with each other and with God, before friends and family.
