Joseph Nkaissery sworn in as Interior Cabinet Secretary

Nairobi, Kenya: Major General (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery was Wednesday sworn in as the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

President Uhuru Kenyatta witnessed the ceremony conducted by the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua at State House, Nairobi.

Major General (Rtd) Nkaissery’s nomination was approved by the National Assembly on Thursday last week after vetting by the Parliamentary committee on appointments.

Speaking during the swearing in ceremony, Uhuru said divisive politics was a major threat to the unity of Kenyans to be able to confront terror and other forms of crime as a united nation.

“Terrorists attacks on Kenyans are not based on political affiliation, religious or ethnic backgrounds. Let us come together and confront the common enemy,” Uhuru added.

He told leaders both in the Government and opposition to rise above partisan interests and discuss issues of benefit in a sober manner.

The President called on politicians to practice mature politics and desist from opposing everything for the sake of it.

Uhuru said the Government settled on Gen Nkaissery after wide consultation.

“We sought a qualified citizen who can deliver on security matters and Gen Nkaissery was the right person,” President Kenyatta said.

He said the recent security laws amendments was aimed at resolving challenges facing the fight against terrorism and was not intended in any way to curtail freedoms enjoyed by Kenyans.

The President said Kenyans will not be cowed by terrorists.

“They cannot intimidate us. We will never surrender even when they hit us. We will follow them wherever they are,” the President said as he assured Kenyans of the Government’s commitment to the war on terror.

The President told Kenyans to remain alert even as they celebrated Christmas and New Year.

 “As I wish you a joyous festive season, please remain alert and be your brothers’ keepers. Volunteer information on suspicious individuals and their activities to security agencies for action,” he said.

Uhuru also cautioned drivers against over-speeding during the Christmas season and observe traffic rules to ensure safety of travelers.

Prior to his appointment, Major General (Rtd) Nkaissery was the Kajiado Central MP, a constituency he has served for the past 12 years.

He has served in the Kenya Army for more than 30 years and was an Assistant Minister for Defence for five years.
