Terrorists may be planning to attack the Coast this festive season

City News

Mombasa Attack

General Service Unit and police officers keep guard outside the Masjid Swafaa Mosque in Kisauni as other officers were raiding the Mosque in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, November 19, 2014.

Even after the exit of Inspector General David Kimaiyo, criminals are not relenting with intelligence reports warning of possible terrorist attacks in parts of the Coast region.

Under pressure, Kimaiyo resigned prematurely after a string of insecurity lapses mainly blamed on the Al-Shabaab, who claimed responsibility for the Mandera killings of non-Muslims. Barely a week after his departure from the helm of the National Police Service, a large number of Al-Shabaab fighters are said to have crossed over into Kenya and are preparing to strike.

The Somali militants are believed to be in constant communication with their accomplices hiding in Hulugho, Kuday, Burgavo and Ras Kiamboni. The Al-Shabaab fighters sneaked into the country through Mangai and Basuba areas. Police are on high alert to foil the attacks as it emerged that an outlawed group in the area was also preparing to strike in the county of Tana River.

Officers are looking for a man who allegedly administered oaths to members of the group living in Bondeni, Majengo, Witu, Ukoni, Kau and Kilelegwani.

Police Spokesman Masoud Mwinyi said, “We are faced with many challenges, but we are trying our best to prevent any attacks and loss of lives. The officers are ready and prepared to confront and face any challenge,” said Mwinyi.
