400 candidates to take part in City gospel talent search

Nairobi will host a regional talent extravaganza, in which more than 400 musicians will take part.

According to organisers of the Nairobi East Gospel Music Awards 2014, individual singers, bands and choirs will compete for awards and titles in 17 categories.

The awards, to be presided over by local and regional seasoned judges, will be held at Ruai Girls Secondary Grounds on December 5.

Already, fans have begun voting for their favourite artistes via text message line 20955. “It will be an opportunity to realise talents in Kenyan artistes,” said Reverend Josephat Njoroge of Jubilee Restoration Christian Church.

Njoroge said even persons with disabilities will also take part.

“I hope the event gives more exposure to both seasoned and budding musicians,” Njoroge said, adding winners in various categories will get cash prices.

The categories up for grabs include gospel female artist of the year, vernacular singer of the year, upcoming gospel artiste of the year, male artist of the year, most promising artist of the year, dance group of the year, live band of the year and gospel producer of the year. Others will be best talent of the year and best vocals of the year among others.

Saturday, celebrated Samburu gospel singer, Sam Lengironi, confirmed he would participate in the event, which he said was an opportunity for local artistes to showcase their talent.

Lengironi says there is no doubt Kenya has highly talented singers but the industry is literally under siege from unscrupulous music traders. During the Ruai extravaganza, artistes will find a forum to deliberate on opportunities and challenges in the music industry.
