Mandera Massacre: DP Ruto says over 100 Al Shabaab militants killed in retaliatory attack

NAIROBI, KENYA:  Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday said Kenya Defence Forces killed over 100 suspected Al Shabaab militants in a retaliatory attack.

While addressing the nation on Sunday over the Saturday bus attack that left over 28 passengers traveling to Nairobi in a bus dead, he said KDF also destroyed camps of the attackers.

“They attacked innocent Kenyans but they did not live to celebrate their achievement,’ said Ruto. “Our forces managed to kill over 100 militants and destroyed camps where the attacks were planned,” he said.

He warned leaders over statements regarding Mombasa mosques operations. “No mosque has been taken over by the government, leaders must be responsible in their statements and some will be called upon to answer few questions over their recent utterances in regards to the raids.”

The DP said it was not the best time to warn non-muslim teachers in Mandera to keep off classes following the attack which claimed over 20 teachers.

"Urging non-Muslim teachers not to go to class would sound a victory to the attackers, we don't want that now," he said.

Suspected Al Shabaab militants on Saturday morning killed at least 28 people on a bus in Arabiya area, Mandera County.

The heavily armed militias are reported to have waylaid Nairobi bound bus, which left the incursion prone Mandera town early in the morning between Mandera and Arabia.
