AP officer wounded as gunmen raid camp in Dertu, Dadaab Garissa County

An administration police officer was Sunday morning injured when gunmen raided their camp in Dertu, Dadaab Garissa County.

The camp is detailed to guard Dertu dam that is under construction. Police say an unknown number of gunmen tried to gain entry into the dam when a confrontation broke out at about 3 am.

“In the process, one officer was injured in the chest and is in hospital but the gang escaped. We do not know the motive of who they were,” said a senior officer aware of the incident but who asked not to be named.

The gang escaped later on. The dam is being constructed in the area amid complaints among some locals they were not involved in the project.

Police suspect that the disagreements among some clans could be the reason for the attack. But another officer said the attackers could be linked to terror groups.

Security has since been beefed up in the area following the raid, officials said.

Meanwhile, two people were Saturday night shot and seriously wounded by unknown gunmen in Garissa Town.

The man and woman were walking near Shifta area when a gunman approached and shot them in the chest and neck before escaping. Police say the victims are in a stable condition in hospital but no arrest has been made so far.

The attacker is said to have escaped on foot soon after the shooting. This is the latest such incident in a series that have happened in many past days. Gunmen have been targeting pedestrians and security officials in a series but police say the attacks are business related. Last month, a police officer was shot dead as he walked from a mosque in Liboi area.

The larger part of the region has been facing terror related attacks in the past months leaving trails of destruction and deaths. The attackers seem to be driven by terror minds and aim at dividing people along religion.
