Four killed in separate road accidents in Nairobi

NAIROBI, KENYA: Four people were Sunday night killed in separate accidents in Nairobi that were blamed on speeding.

Two others were injured in the accidents that involved pedestrians, police said.

The first incident happened in Marurui area along the Northern bypass where a pedestrian was ran over by a speeding car and another one happened along Thika Road near Githurai.

Police said another pedestrian was hit by a car along Mombasa Road near Imara Daima area while the fourth victim was a rider who died after hitting a barrier along Nanyuki Road in Industrial Area.

Nairobi head of traffic Edward Mwamburi said some of the victims are yet to be identified.

"In some incidents it was a hit and run but we also have detained some of the vehicles involved in the accidents," he said.

There were three other fatal accidents involving pedestrians in Rift Valley, Eastern and Central provinces on Sunday night bringing to seven those killed.

He added they are still conducting civic education on the need by the pedestrians to use footbridges.

Mwamburi said many hit and run accidents and especially on pedestrians in the city have been blamed on speeding.
