Woman set to sue hospital sperm bank for 'error' after having mixed-race baby

Midwest, USA:  Jennifer Cramblett, 36, says she was given the sperm of a black man by the clinic and the mix-up has caused her stress and anxiety.

A white lesbian mother is suing a sperm bank over claims she was mistakenly sent a black man's sperm and gave birth to a mixed-race baby as a result.

Jennifer Cramblett, 36, and her partner Amanda Zinkon spent more than a year deciding on a donor to father a child.

They specifically chose a white donor and paid around £1,500 pounds for six vials of semen.

It wasn't until Jennifer was pregnant that the couple realised the mistake.

Planning to have a second child, they asked Midwest Sperm Bank for more vials from the same donor.

But when it arrived, Jennifer's doctor realised the batch numbers were different.

Midwest Sperm Bank are said to have told Jennifer the error occurred because they use paper records and a number was accidentally transposed incorrectly.

Jennifer gave birth to healthy, mixed-race girl Payton who is now two-years-old but says the mix-up has caused the couple stress and anxiety.

In a lawsuit filed against the clinic, she says the couple chose a white donor because they live a small, all-white community in Ohio and are afraid their child will be ostracised.

Jennifer says her family find her sexuality difficult - often asking her to keep it hidden - and she says they are sometimes racist towards their child.

"Jennifer lives each day with fears, anxieties and uncertainty about her future and Payton's future," says the lawsuit.

Speaking NBC News, Jennifer claims the sperm bank has never apologised.

"Initially when we found out - I was more mad at the sperm bank," she said.

"For not caring about my feelings and emotions and just pushing me away.

"There was no sorry, no accountability. I wanted them to stand up and say 'this is what we did'."

Jennifer says she hopes highlighting her case will make sure it never happens to anyone else again.

"I will not let this happen. You can't just do that and say you've got a healthy child, you should be happy.

"I am happy that I have a healthy child. We'd never trade her. But I'm not going let them get away with it.
