A two year-old boy had to have a chopstick removed from deep within his brain after he accidentally shoved it up his nose.

Surgeons spent four hours carefully taking the stick out of Huang Zicheng's head after it penetrated three inches into his brain.

An MRI scan shows the offending article wedged inside the boy's skull.

Thankfully the chopstick did not damage any major nerves and arteries - and the youngster, from Wuhan in Hubei Province, China, is expected to make a full recovery.

His father said that the first he knew of the accident was when he heard Zicheng scream, the Metro reports.

He said: “I turned around and was shocked to find that the long stick had gone into his head from his nose.”

Chopstick injuries involving children are not unknown in China.

Earlier this year an 18-month-old boy ended up in hospital after he tripped while running with a chopstick in his mouth.

He fell forward and the sharp utensil was driven through the roof of his mouth and almost an inch into his brain.

Thankfully, the Chinese boy – called Li Kaiyi – was making a good recovery after doctors removed the object.

Li was playing at a friend's house in the Chinese city of Yueyang, in Hunan Province, when he was speared by the chopstick after having a meal.
