The big match of the weekend was arguably between top Kenyan Premier League title contenders Gor Mahia and Chemelil Sugar at City stadium.

Playing under the hot sun with their 12th player present like always, Gor Mahia started the match on high note, making their first attempt just 33 seconds into play when Dan Sserunkuma lobbed a cheeky ball to George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo who arrowed it across Chemelil’s goalkeeper, but there was no one to tap it in.

The tempo of the game increased with both sides trying to create chances and it was the nice one-two exchanges between Odhiambo and Sserunkuma on the ninth minute that produced the second serious attempt of the game.

Chemelil too did not hold back as they pushed upfront and on the 10th minute, Haminis Mwinyi’s shot went wide.

The visitors mainly used the left flank as their avenue to get into Gor’s box with Meshack Karani as the main man terrorising K’Ogalo’s back line.

BALANCED MATCH

A balanced match it seemed on the half hour mark with both teams looking for a breakthrough.

Musa Mohamed got booked in the 25th minute for a foul at the edge of the box and Mwinyi curled in a good free kick which Gor’s custodian Jerim Onyango punched it away.

Gor striker ‘Blackberry’ was so alive in the game with his terrific moves and splitter touches that troubled Chemelil’s defence.

Just when the Sugar millers thought the first 45 minutes would end goalless, Sserunkuma flicked a clever header from Musa Mohamed’s supply to make it 1-0 in the 46th minute for Gor.

Second half was eventful as Gor picked from where they left in the first half.

Sserunkuma would have grabbed an early second goal in the second half after some fine work from the ever live ‘Blackberry’, but Chemelil’s keeper, Jairus Adira denied the diminutive striker a goal.

In a more ruthless way, Gor Mahia was all over Chemelil with slightly bigger possession.

The two main men, ‘Blackberry’ and Ssrunkuma who gave the Sugar men some torrid time all through the game were on the show again as the Ugandan was set through with a neat pass that caught the visitor’s defence unawares.

TOP SPOT

Sserunkuma burst into the box and placed a cool low ball into the net to make it 2-0 for Gor and his 12th goal of the season.

With the win, Gor extend their lead to 47 points. Chemelil are still fourth in the log. Chemelil players and technical bench led by the team manager Rajab Said and his assistant Meshack Muyonga vowed to make remarkable recoveries in remaining matches and stay in contention for the top spot.

Meanwhile, in Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa, Bandari threw away two crucial points after they were held to a 1-1 draw by the visiting Western Stima. In Mumias, AFC Leopards came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against KCB.
