Kenya's representative in the BBA un-masked

Kenya’s Melvin Alusa has landed the coveted spot of Kenya’s representative in the ninth season of the reality TV show ‘Big Brother Hotshots’.

Melvin was in the last Big Brother Africa (BBA) as a fake house mate and comes from a rich artistic family with his younger brother Bien-Aime Baraza Alusa being a celebrated singer with Kenya’s music sensation Sauti Soul.

Melvin, who was a surprise guest in the last Big Brother house, is remembered for having made Annabel Mbaru from Kenya cry after telling her that she was being nominated all the time because she was not getting along with anybody.

In a bold and ground-breaking move, M-Net and series producers Endemol SA unveiled the names of the participating house-mates live on the official Big Brother website yesterday.

WORLD-RENOWNED

Alusa is a world-renowned Kenyan actor who has had roles in films such as The First Grader in 2010 and The Garden of Eden in 2008. In 2013, he was nominated for an International Emmy Award.

Three Big Brother house mates will be introduced on a daily basis from yesterday, followed by regular updates on social media.

During the 8th season of Big Brother, more than 6 million fans interacted with the show via the website, Twitter, and Facebook.

“We are breaking new ground and the website and social media are the perfect platforms to engage with the fans in real-time”, the M-Net East Africa Regional Director Michael Ndetei said.

“The show will go on, and both fans and house mates are in for some riveting television, coupled with all the drama, intrigue and heart-stopping twists that have long become synonymous with the reality show,” he added.

Big Brother Hotshots live eviction shows and highlights will air on Maisha Magic Channel 161. Alusa was the first contestant to be unveiled, alongside Uganda’s Ella and Zimbabwe’s Butterphly.

UGALI WITH CHICKEN

Alusa, who is based in Nairobi, is married and has three children. His favourite food is ugali with chicken stew and traditional vegetables.

Alusa is on record as saying his favourite book is TD Jakes’s He-Motions and he likes watching National Geographic, The Exes and Nigerian movies on TV. On the music front, he enjoys listening to Sauti-Sol, Mafikizolo, P.Square, Youssou N’Dour and Salif Keita. One of his favourite films, Training Day, features one of his favourite actors: Denzel Washington.

On his appointment as Kenya’s representative in the biggest African reality TV show, Alusa says he is looking forward to having the continent watching him: “I am an artist, a performer, so I love attention. I am not in the least bit intimidated. In fact, I’m thrilled”.

Speaking to Jimmy Gait in his vibe weekly, Alusa lists Mombasa and his village of Kakamega as his favourite places in Kenya, because they’re both very exotic and have a rich culture. He says the best thing about Africa is the people.

“Africans are both beautiful in form and diverse cultures,” he says. Outside of Africa, his favourite place is Brazil.
